Maria Herrera wins the first historic race of the FIM Women’s Racing Circuit World Championship
Misano World Circuit, 15 June 2024 – A large crowd at the Emilia-Romagna Round WorldSBK once again applauded the victory in race 1 of the WorldSBK of the Turkish Toprak Razgatlioglu who with his BMW preceded the pair of official Ducatis. Second Nicolò Bulega, author of a great comeback and third place for Alvaro Bautista. Fourth Locatelli. Among the Italians in the top ten, seventh Iannone and ninth Petrucci.
It was Achille Lauro who waved the checkered flag marking the arrival of Race 1 of WorldSBK. The singer from Verona is not the only star from the world of music present today at Misano World Circuit: on the grid, next to his boyfriend Andrea Iannone, there was Elodie. Also spotted at MWC today were Andrea Dovizioso and Franco Morbidelli.
In the Supersport 300, victory went to the Spaniard Inigo Iglesias (Kawasaki Ninja 400 Team RT Motorsport by SKM) in a sprint over the Indonesian Aldi Satya Mahendra. Third place for the Italian Mirko Gennai ahead of Marc Garcia and Pepe Osuna.
The Spaniard and championship leader Adrian Huertas won race 1 of the WSSP, outwitting the Italian Yari Montella on the straight. Third place for Stefano Manzi.
There was trepidation for the accident in race 1 of the WorldWCR to Mia Rusthen, Norwegian rider competing in the first round of the FIM Women’s Racing Circuit World Championship, due to the conditions following the fall at turn 16 of MWC shortly before halfway.
After the red flag that stopped the race, the rider was immediately treated on the track. Mia Rusthen was then transported by ambulance to the Medical Center and by helicopter to the Bufalini Trauma Center in Cesena.
The sporting program continued and the race was rescheduled for the afternoon to run the remaining five laps. In the end, Maria Herrera won in the sprint, ahead of Ana Carrasco and Sara Sanchez. Fourth place for Italian Roberta Ponziani.
GENDER EQUALITY IN MOTORSPORT, FIM TALK SHOW
Numerous events accompany the debut of the FIM Women’s Racing Circuit World Championship, with female drivers from 19 countries.
Yesterday afternoon there was also a talk show dedicated to gender equality in motorsport, moderated by Motosprint director Federico Porrozzi and former volleyball champion Rachele Sangiuliano.
“Our advice to girls who encounter a passion for motorsport – said two icons like Nancy Van de Ven and Katja Poensgen – is to cultivate the dream of excelling with passion and sacrifice and not to allow anyone to get in the way, using prejudice. We ourselves had to win the first battle at home, to convince the family to allow us to ride a motorbike, then on the roads we travelled we overcame mistrust and skepticism, but we always remained attached to our dream.
Today there is a world closer to the values of equality, thanks to FIM there are guidelines and concrete opportunities like this world championship that starts here in Misano”.
FIM President Jorge Viegas also wanted to be at the baptism of the FIM Women’s Racing Circuit World Championship: “We have worked hard in recent years to spread equality in motorsport, a job done on all continents. We have two specific tasks: to guarantee safety in the facilities and to make opportunities available to all those who want to try their hand at our wonderful sport. We were the first to organize an ad hoc commission and after a lot of work between trial, motocross and enduro, now the track also arrives to complete the route. There is a lot of work to do, but there is a new awareness: the licenses requested by women are increasing and we will reach the finish line where it will no longer make any sense to distinguish between women and men”.
Giovanni Copioli (FMI President), proud of the debut in Italy, in Misano, of the new championship, recalled the work done in Italy to overcome a cultural prejudice: “Sport is a powerful vehicle to overcome prejudices and motorsport demonstrates this concretely. We must continue, it is not an easy road, but today we have taken a historic step together”.
Janika Judeika (Director of the FIM Women’s Commission) recalled the tools available, guidelines spread throughout the world that suggest initiatives, behaviors and languages useful for bridging the gender gap.
Paolo Pavesio (Marketing and Motorsport Director Yamaha Motor Europe N.V.) said he was proud to be part of a historic moment with a brand that has decided to commit to supporting the championship and to reduce the cost of entry into motorsport. “Yamaha believes that motorsports should be accessible to everyone, regardless of gender or ethnicity. With the WorldWCR, a championship dedicated to women and promoted by FIM, Dorna and Yamaha, visibility will increase, and it will send a very clear message to young women around the world”.
The meeting was also greeted enthusiastically by Damiano Zamana, FIM Deputy CEO & Operations Director and David Bosser, FIM Sporting Business Development Senior Manager who underlined the historic value of the days in progress.
Closing for Senator Mimma Spinelli, member of the interparliamentary group for motorcycle mobility: “Everyone, with their own responsibility, has a job to do to overcome prejudices and bridge the gender gap. Let’s do it and meet here next year to verify the steps forward made”.
